STUDENT AND POSTDOCTORAL

Vector Genetics Lab at UC Davis: Multiple Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
The Vector Genetics Lab (VGL) at the University of California, Davis currently has three post-doctoral positions available for highly motivated candidates with a background in ecology, population genetics, genomics, or bioinformatics. The VGL focuses on problems in the fields of evolutionary genetics, ecology, and vector-borne disease control. The VGL is currently engaged in a large project focused on the biology of malaria (parasites & vectors) at sites in the Gulf of Guinea, West Africa. These include the islands of Annobón, São Tomé, Príncipe, and Bioko, as well as coastal Equatorial Guinea. Current research centers on our collaboration with the University of California Malaria Initiative (UCMI) (stopmalaria.org). The overall goal of UCMI is to contribute to the elimination of malaria in Africa by using genetically engineered mosquito (GEM) vectors, and the VGL’s role is to conduct field trials of these GEMs. This cutting-edge approach involves the release of GEMs with Plasmodium-resistant genes propagated by a CRISPR/Cas9 gene drive. Successful candidates will work as members of a large team of fellow scientists and students. Each post-doctoral fellow is expected to take the lead in a scientific project in agreement with the PI. Collaboration, including sharing of time and expertise, is expected and mandatory. Mentoring at least one undergraduate research student each year is expected. Duration is two years with the possibility of extension based on funding. Applications are actively being reviewed and will continue until the positions are filled. Learn more.

FELLOWSHIPS / FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Call for Research Proposals: Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District Funding Opportunity
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District is requesting research proposals. This funding opportunity is aimed at improving our Integrated Vector Management Program targeting mosquitoes, red imported fire ants, and flies in the Coachella Valley. Past research projects have included spatial mosquito repellents, virus transmission models, vegetation management in wetlands, biological control of fire ants, and activity of house flies. Because of the unique environment including very high temperatures and low precipitation, projects designed to work with the environmental conditions for surveillance of vectors and vector-borne diseases and projects that tailor control methods to the habitat here are of great interest. Please see our website for guidelines on proposal submission, interests of the District, and a budget worksheet (you can obtain these at here under Research Program FY 2025-2026).
