STUDENT AND POSTDOCTORAL

PhD Graduate Assistantship (VectorED Network, DE)

The graduate assistant will work under the supervision of Vincenzo Ellis on projects associated with the CDC funded VectorED Network: 1) molecular barcoding of mosquito species and 2) evaluation of a rodent baited vaccine against the Lyme disease pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi. Duties will include field work (trapping and identifying mosquitos, dragging for and identifying ticks), molecular lab work, bioinformatics, data analysis, and writing. This is a paid stipend position. Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District is inviting applications to fill this position. Seasonal Vector Control Aides I/II (San Mateo County MVCD, CA)

Applications are always accepted and kept on file for three years.

San Mateo County Mosquito & Vector Control is inviting applications to fill this position. Under direct supervision of the Operations Director, Field Operations Supervisor or Vector Control Technicians shall carry out routine inspections of residences in areas known to have mosquitoes, and/or complete field work entailing inspection and larvicidal treatment of creeks, catch basins, drains, salt marsh areas, miscellaneous sources, and stocking mosquito fish in backyard ponds. These positions also include preparing materials and equipment for work assignments, service requests, clearing access ways, some drainage maintenance, general maintenance, housekeeping, and assistance with frequent or routine needs. Seasonal employees are required to work dependably and cooperatively with others, maintain and appreciate safety precautions, and operate some specialized equipment. Seasonal employees may operate right-hand drive vehicles. Applications are always accepted and kept on file for three years.

Starting salary: $19.00 – $25.00 per hour (depending on experience)

Seasonal Laboratory Aide (Contra Costa MVCD, CA)

The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District is seeking applications to fill this position. Under the supervision of the Scientific Programs Manager, assists with field surveys for vectors and vector-borne diseases; assists with care/maintenance of sentinel chicken flocks; records data and performs routine data entry; assists with laboratory assays and applied research projects; keeps laboratory and lab equipment clean and organized; assists with repair and maintenance of field surveillance equipment, but may include other work needed by the District.

Field & Lab Assistant/Seasonal Helper (Lake County VCD, CA)

The Field & Lab Assistant/Seasonal Helper traps mosquitoes and other insects, tends chicken flocks, identifies insects, and learns a variety of skills related to public health. An interest in biology is helpful but not required.  No experience is required. This is a 40-hour/week position. The position is expected to run from April 1 through August 31.

Seasonal Utility Worker (San Joaquin County MVCD, CA)

This is a seasonal position that runs from April 29th, 2024 through mid-October 2024. Under general supervision of the District Assistant Entomologist, and/or Mosquito Control Supervisor, utility worker assists in the surveillance, inspection, and control of mosquitoes and other vectors; performs supportive work such as lab and facilities maintenance, record keeping, and other related work.

State Entomologist are concerned with flies, snails, beetles and other pests (including rodents) of economic and/or medical significance, and with the development, test or application of methods for their propagation or control. Major approaches to problem solving include methods of manipulating the effectiveness of the natural enemy; modifying the environment; changing adverse agricultural practices; introducing predators, parasites, pathogens and other beneficial organisms; devising and adapting abatement practices; applying chemicals; and integrating biological, chemical, cultural and/or other control measures. The Entomologist III independently performs a limited range of professional entomological assignments; may serve as project leader; and performs other related duties as assigned. The Entomologist IV independently performs the analysis, evaluation and solution of complex entomological problems with statewide implications; may supervise lower level entomologist as assigned; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Public Information Officer (Coachella Valley MVCD, CA)

Under direction, this at-will, exempt, managerial position conducts public outreach, awareness, and education programs to promote awareness of vectors and control operations of the District; conveys news, information, events, meetings, and other services to District staff and the community; and performs other related duties as required. The Public Information Manager is responsible for the communications program including government coordination, media relations, public outreach and education, and enhancement of inter-office communications. This position is also responsible for information on the District website. The incumbent supervises, trains, counsels, evaluates and disciplines departmental staff.

SECVBD and TN Dept. of Health - Vector-Borne Diseases Fellowship Opportunity

The Tennessee Department of Health Vector-Borne Diseases (VBD) Program in collaboration with the Southeastern Center of Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases at the University of Florida, is seeking degreed applicants interested in furthering their training in Vector-Borne Diseases while working collaboratively with CDC, state health departments and universities in the southeastern region of the US. The VBD Fellowship Program is designed to provide training in three foundational areas of Vector-Borne Disease research and practice: Public Health Entomology, Laboratory Science, and Epidemiology. Activities will include applied research and surveillance projects relevant to the Southeastern U.S. Topics will include tick and mosquito surveillance and pathogen testing, tick control studies in the field, surveillance, and response to VBD clusters and identification of imported cases of significance. These projects will contribute to understanding, monitoring, and preventing Lyme disease, spotted fever rickettsioses, ehrlichiosis, West Nile, La Crosse encephalitis, and many other vector-borne diseases.
